The History of Sutton-in-Craven written 1927 by Nellie Stell
This history of Sutton was written between 1925 and 1927 by local historian Nellie Stell. I've tried
to preserve the spellings and punctuation of the original. Special thanks to Mrs Armitage of Sutton CE School and Christine Robinson
for the extended loan of the manuscript.

46. Holme Lane
The principal road of Sutton is Holme Lane. This connects Sutton with the Blackburn Road i.e. the road to Lancashire.
All through the township accounts are entries relating to the mending of this road. The old road is about a yard below the
present surface. Some years ago the road was opened just beyond the Manse and the marks of the cartwheels cut into the stone
were seen on either side of the brook which crossed the road there.
In 1866 the road was widened and remade. Since this date there have been many improvements in its surface and construction.
The road goes through the village and over the hill to Haworth. It is not used for traffic beyond Sutton.
