The History of Sutton-in-Craven written 1927 by Nellie Stell
This history of Sutton was written between 1925 and 1927 by local historian Nellie Stell. I've tried
to preserve the spellings and punctuation of the original. Special thanks to Mrs Armitage of Sutton CE School and Christine Robinson
for the extended loan of the manuscript.

39. Boundary Riding
The boundaries of the parishes in the middle ages were not definitely marked. The township officials knew the boundaries
because of the custom of Boundary Riding. At certain times the constable and others rode along the boundary line right
round the township.
The boundaries of Sutton to the South and West are on outlying moors and were common land until the enclosure in 1815.
The custom of riding the boundary seems to have been carried on fairly regularly until the year 1783. On May 2 1783 is
the last entry in the accounts books relating to this. It is "Spent when boundering 2/-".
