10. Reign of King John
In the reign of King John there is a brief mention of a land transaction at Sutton.
This occurred in 1202 when Richard son of Henry (Richard is given no surname), and Margaret his wife, sold to Robert le Vavassour,
one carucate of land in Sutton. At the same time le Vavassour gave to Richard and his wife two bovates of land in Sutton.
The document seems vague, but it gives us the name of the first known tenant farmer in our village, for the land bought by Robert
is specified as that being held by Richard Brun. The document does not say in which part of the township Brun lived.
The record also gives us the rent at which land was let in Sutton, Richard had to pay for two bovates the sum of 1/3 a year.
