40. The Church
There was no church in the village until the year 1869. From an old almanac I find that services were held before this, in
the National School under the charge of the Rev. E. N. Scott. Earlier still the people must have attended the Church at
Kildwick, about a mile away.
In 1867 Thomas Bairstow left money to build a Church. The site was midway between the two villages, and on a site at the
foot of the hill. It was finished in 1869 and was consecrated on St Thomas' day and dedicated to that Saint.
