45. Halifax - Settle Road
The Halifax and Settle pack horse road cuts across the south-western part of Sutton Parish. It crosses Aden and goes under Sutton
and Hangingstone Crags, down Dick Lane in Cowling, across the Colne Road and across the stream in Wainman Bottoms and joins the
Carr Head road, then away over the hills to Settle.
The road is now little used, not at all for goods traffic. It has one or two curious milestones. At the Sutton end of the Slippery
Ford road is a milestone with its face turned to the wall. The two names on it are Colne and Keighley. The former spelled "Cown" and
the latter "Kighley". Another milestone is on the Carr Head road. It tells that Settle in only 12 miles away, really it is 20; and
that Halifax is also but 12 miles distant, it also is about 20 miles away.
