41. The Baptist Church
Continuous records of this Church begin in 1780. However there is mention of meetings in a barn in 1711.
At first there were many difficulties. In 1768 John Beaton became minister. During his ministry the meeting house was
enlarged and many people were added to the Church. This seems prosperous, but the record says that "he opened too wide the
door of membership". As a result his successor was mainly occupied with discipline. During the ministry of William Roe the
Church passed through troublous times.
In 1780 John Walton began his pastorate. Under his influence the Church flourished, and made peaceful progress. The building
has been several times enlarged and improved.
There is also a small Wesleyan Mission in the village from the Chapel at Cross Hills. This is very small and has few members.
