2. The Position of Sutton
The township of Sutton was formerly included in the parish of Kildwick, which lies in the wapontake of Staincliffe, in the North
West portion of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The ancient parish of Kildwick was extensive and included the townships, Kildwick,
Farnhill, Bradley, Cononley, Cowling, Glusburn, Sutton, Steeton and Silsden. At different times these have been separated from
the mother parish into ecclesiastical districts. Sutton, with the addition of part of Glusburn was so constituted in 1869.
The village of Sutton is built at the foot of the hills to the South of the River Aire, about half way between Skipton and Keighley,
these towns being roughly ten miles apart.
