12. Nomina Villarum
The Nomina Villarum of 1316 is disappointing so far as the village of Sutton is concerned, for it is one of the omissions
of the list, although all the neighbouring townships are mentioned. These returns were required in relation to military
levies granted in the Parliament at Lincoln.
The name of each lord of the manor was also given, and it was directed that one man at arms should be raised from every
township. It would have been interesting to know which man represented Sutton in the army six hundred years ago. It would
be interesting also to know the reason for the omission. Possibly Sutton was too small to raise a man at arms.
