9. Domesday Book
The first written mention of Sutton is in the Domesday Book. The entries for the district are all brief, that for
Sutton simply stating that RAVENCHILL held two carucates of land to be taxed. Most of the entries for Yorkshire are short,
due to the laying waste of the land because of rebellion. Evidently the land near Sutton received this treatment.
Ravenchill would be an Englishman, and not very long after this date he was deprived of his land at Sutton. This, along with
Malsis was given to Gilbert Tison, a great warrior who had been standard bearer at the Battle of Hastings. Thus Sutton and
Malsis were connected. All through the middle ages they were joined and Malsis Hall was the Manor House of Sutton.
