Planning Application - 29 Houses on Green Fields - URGENT
Dear All
there has been a planning application put in for the land I mentioned in my previous post. This land isn't even on the Local Plan yet, this is still being debated. The residents immediately affected by this haven't had any notification yet, I found out by accident! Consultation ends on 25th July.
Anyone wishing to object needs the information below.

And another thing! I've seen that the public consultation started in April, so why don't we know anything about? This must be a misprint surely? Also that the decision is delegated, so does that mean it doesn't go before Planning Committee? Help

Had word back from CDC - the April start date was a mistake (!!!!!!). The planning notices are due to go up in the locale on 4th July, letters to the "neighbours" were sent out yesterday, post is expected to take 3-4 days (!!!!). Plans can be viewed at

I objected online to this development. Liz is doing a Stirling job ,well done for the info liz. The trouble is even if the developer loses the case and the inspector rules against the development ,the developers keep coming back time after time until the decision goes there way .then once it goes the developers way,the public don't get a comeback to appeal against decision going the developers way .as has happened several times in the past .Green Lane Glusburn being an example .
Hope the development doesn't go ahead but it needs the public to oppose it .time is running out

Interestingly, whilst doing some research for my objection, I came across this

The land off West Lane that was granted planning for 10 houses (inc 4 affordables) last year has been sold - no doubt to developers. How much would you stake on them keeping to the original plan, or applying to have it changed, e.g. more houses or less affordables................... |

yes, it is Harry who has applied. Please place an on-line objection from Oz as a former Suttoner! The stone terraces are the gateway to the village, and you're absolutely right, development on this land would ruin this approach for ever, not to mention the future potential to join us with Eastburn. The architect has stated that this land is included on the SHLAA as a preferred site, however he is wrong on two counts - (I) the SHLAA is a DRAFT document for consultation (2) The Parish Council have objected to this land being released for building and specifically asked for it not to be included. Therefore, the only "preferences" for building on this lie with CDC planning and the land owners!
Not only do we need to fight this application, but we need to get it removed from the draft SHLAA. They currently have all the fields along that side of Sutton Lane as a "preferred" site for housing.

Can I please urge anyone who has had a leaflet dropped through letter box to please spare 5 mins to send objection to the two email addresses at bottom of leaflet . It probably needs dozens if not hundreds of objections for the council and planning committee to sit up and take notice. .
When programmes like X factor and big brother get hundreds of you sparing time to phone in then surely massive housing developments in the south craven area are more important and affect your life more than any tv programme . The developers and applicant will be rubbing their hands if only about two dozen object.
Can I also thank whoever has taken the time to print and distribute the leaflets . |

Just posted my comments to planners and it occurred to me that Wilson Street is not just the end of village on that side but that the gradient at that point becomes steeper at Ingham's fields, which why the buildings at the end of Wilson Street nestle into the landscape and why building on the fields would be so visually disruptive and inappropriate. Wilson street is not only the at present eastern boundary but is also the natural, geological and visual one |

Hi All
I have emailed my objection, I know it is like hitting your head on a wall as the developers keep on coming back but if we do not make a stance we will not have a village left it will be a town tagged onto Eastburn, Cross |Hills and Glusburn. If we make enough noise it may just deter future developers. I fear for our children's and grandchildren s safety as the road through Sutton just gets busier and busier. If we want to live in a nice enviroment we have to fight for it I am afraid. |

I have been keeping an eye on the postings regarding a proposal to build 29 houses on a field off Eastburn Lane opposite to the cricket field. I can understand the concern being expressed by the villagers. - that the development is inappropriate: it would extend the village beyond its current boundary, that it would erode the gap between Eastburn and Sutton, additional loading on the sewer etc, etc.. I would not like to see the planning application being granted.
But it has set me thinking of how radically the village has changed in my lifetime. And changed it HAS.
My ancestors were farmers and builders. My great grandfather, Heaton, was involved with the building of the Pinnacle, My grandad William, was engaged in the construction of Glusburn Institute and he built the bungalow in Bent Lane in which to retire about 1930. My dad, Charlie followed on in their footsteps, working as a house builder in the difficult economical times prior to WW2
I was born in a house in Hazel Grove, built by my father in the 1930’s. He built several houses there including a terrace extension to a pair of stone houses probably built about the turn of the century. When my dad started building there would have been only three houses - Midgley’s, Simon’s and Hargreaves. Nothing else on the track leading to Sutton Fields and Glusburn. In the 1930’s he built several pairs of semi-detached houses in the same vicinity. My family built a pair of bungalows at the bottom of Bent Lane prior to the war and dad was engaged in building another pair of semis when the war came along and all building work was suspended. He was eventually granted permission to complete them in 1941 and we moved in. As far as I can recollect, he built no more dwellings in Sutton. He was drafted into bomb damage repair work all over the country and he ended his working life as a General Foreman with a firm in Leeds. I make these comments merely to let you know that my family has, over the years, been party to development in the village.
But it was after WW2 that the size of the village began to grow far more rapidly than before. More effective Planning legislation which governed which land could be used for house building was introduced in 1947. Planning law had been around since the early 1900’s but it was far from satisfactory. We had ribbon development and huge swathes of land built on by local housing authorities .
So what has changed in Sutton since 1947? I have been trying to remember.
The allotment land behind the Baptist Chapel which I used to look out over from our front room has gone.
The field between the Old Dyke and Hazel Grove Road, farmed by Harry Ingham’s dad Frank went to Housing in the early 50’s ( the Old Dyke which we used to jump from side to side disappeared in a piped culvert.)
All the allotments off Crag Lane (the view from David Laycock’s front room) have been lost to Housing as have the fields from the Low Fold as far as the Acres.
The acres have been largely built on.
Then there is the enormous development between Sutton Fields and Holme Lane, land farmed by my Uncle Norman and by the Thompsons from Holme Bridge. This virtually linked Crosshills and Sutton.
Both of the village Mills have gone, lost to Housing schemes.
The remainder of the Hall Estate, development of which began before the War, has been built up.
Then there is the big estate that was developed off Park Avenue.
Houses now fill the former garden of Col. Bateman’s house and alongside Bent Lane as far as Chaffers place.
The Council compulsory purchased Uncle Walters field and built the old folks home (now demolished)
There are probably far more housing developments which I have missed, after all I have been away for 60 years. But has the village been improved? If you were to ask me my answer would be, ‘Yes and No’. With the pressures on local planning authorities, stemming from increases in population, not getting any less, we can expect more planning applications which give rise to controversy . I’d like to know what the village will look like in another 60 years time but I’m afraid I never will.
Oh, and could someone remind me the name of the Chip Shop owner who traded from what is now the Desi Raj Take Away?

193 pages of objections so far uploaded - only 3 days to go. Lets see if we can break the 300 barrier. Sutton doesn't want this, reading the letters people are sending to the council just proves the strength of feeling. Keep them going in - Thursday is the last day |

Wow, incredible number of objections placed - we broke the 300 barrier! 308 in total (actually 328 but they put mine on twice!!).
Just goes to show, the village doesn't want this. Thanks everyone for trying, let's hope that the planning department see sense and recommend this for refusal. |
