i would love to hear from anyone who has any memories or old photos of the 11 plus club(youth club) which ran every sunday evening in st thomas hall(village hall)

a great evening for all the local kids every sunday with music.pool.various games
and yearly competitions
2 sets of parents used to watch over the kids every week
and the kids could take turns every week to dj . the weekly attendance would be around 30 kids aged 11 to 16

after posting the pic and having no replys i take it most of the kids on the picture have moved away from the area
i only see one or two of them in the village occasionally
i know all the adults in the pic still live locally

Graham,

The girl directly next to you is Suzanne Briggs I believe, sister of Andrew Briggs who is also in the picture and my old next door neighbours for some years. Lee Duxbury became a professional footballer at Bradford, Huddersfield, Oldham etc. That is a rare picture of Jonathan Broughton I think - didn't he and his sister move into the cottages opposite the Airey's farm near the Pinnacle ? I remember him and his sister mainly from the YPF at the Baptist Church run by Messrs. Barsby, Mitchell and Birtwhistle (all really nice guys). I cannot remember if you attented the YPF - did you ? The 11 Plus Discos were good (disco era I think - Catherine Oakman was a very good dancer). Do you also remember the Glusburn Institute Discos ? Those were in the days when we all believed we were either John Travolta or Olivia Newton John.

Thanks Graham.....I definitely remember Graham Scaife and Craig Wilkinson (who I think formed a Punk Band), Graham Harrison (who was very tall as a 11 year old whereas I was very short), Dane Middleton (whose father was the Sutton Park Warden and we used to play footie for Steeton FC), Bruce Walker and John Turton (who was as small as me !). Are they all still local ? There was some rivalry between the CP and CE Schools and so I tended to pal around with the likes of Mark and Alan 'Lordus' Lord, David Pettit, Richard and David 'Tombo' Thompson, Peter 'Bopper' Riley, Neil 'Maggot' Marklew, Robert 'Robbie' Raby, Andrew 'Geordie' Porter, Graham Wild, Russell and Raymond Golson, Andrew 'Kirky' Kirk, Martin Airey, Andrew 'Sharpie' Sharp, David Brown, Ian 'Finnie' Finlayson, Ian Duggan, the Longbottom Twins, John and Rupert Smith, Stephen Walton, Neil 'Robbo' Robinson and, occasionally, my brother Jeoff who still lives on Baxter Wood in Cross Hills. Do you remember this mob ? I wonder how many of them are still living locally ? I am sure I can see Maggot wearing a wig on one of the Fun Day pictures from last year.

On your picture, I confused Jonathan Broughton with the Forsyth's I think who moved into the cottages opposite the Airey's Farm - dementia set in with me several years ago ! Do you still live in Sutton yourself ? Strangely, I live in the London Borough of Sutton, Surrey - must be in the blood.

Crikey!
What a role call from the remnants of my youthfull memories. There are names there that bring memories flooding back.
Michael was right about the rivalry between the schools, I attended Sutton C of E and was taught by Mrs Mellon (thats probably not the way to spell her name), Mrs Bell, Mrs Preston I think, Mr Davies definatley in the attic room. Was there a Mrs Ackroyd?
The institute discos at Glusburn were great but my loyalties have to be with the 11+ club. I remember Catherine Oakman and a girl called Alex Binns , I'msure they use to hang around together. They were all older than me but were in the same year as my older brother Steven. Raymond Golson was his best man.
I always remember watching Gary Leach with fascination when Northern Soul came out and he would dance non stop.
Keep the memories of Sutton in the 70's & 80's coming it does your soul good to look back.
I'll get my mum to dig out a photo or two next time I am over Crosshills way and scan them onto the site.

Message for Graham Smith: I have to disagree with Michael Swan I believe the girl next to you is Mandy Palfreman from Park Ave. I too remember the youth club just can't remember who I went with !!!!
Jonny Broughton and his sister Claire lived in the cottages on the High St. My brothers Joe & Mick Matthews see him from time to time in Leeds. My cousins the Longbottom twins still both live in Sutton. Can you also remember my other cousin Liz Brown who also lives in Sutton and is still in contact with Hazel Lee and Zoe Taylor.

Hello Graham

Lisa is right it's not me next to you. (well done for spotting that Lisa) I'm not sure where you are on the photo but I know I'm not on this one (thank god) I was a few years younger than you lot, but I did join the club later....does anyone remember the Panto we did for our Parents & the locals ??? "Snow White and the seven Dwarfs" my brother played the part of Bashfull...I was in the Chorus and did a dance routine along with Alison Falshaw, Ann Dewhurst, and Lizette Cookson.
Michaels memory isn't all that bad though cos we were neighbours when we lived on Rowan Garth... and Robbo who he recalls as being one of his mates in now my other half
