Local referendums In many other countries around the world, communities have the right to put any local issue to a local vote. The ability to trigger a referendum can enliven local democratic debate and give people a way of making their voice heard on the issues that are close to their heart. Currently, in this country, communities can only trigger a local referendum in limited circumstances, and on a very limited range of questions. The Localism Bill will give local people the right to suggest votes on any local issue that they think is important. Local authorities and other public bodies will be required to take the outcome into account as they make their decisions.
The above is from page 9 of the document. will be interesting to see the outcome tomorrow on the decision to build 20 new homes in cowling of which over 90% of the local population were opposed to.and everyone in the meeting in cowling last year voted against. please see message board on cowling web site for details of this planning application. i know this is regarding another local village, but the decision is the first since this new bill was introduced and it will have a major impact on future applications in the surrounding villages. |

“The planning meeting went ahead this afternoon, and the result was 5:3 against developing this site. The Parish Council surveys were commented upon favourably as having 'drilled down deeper' than did the survey by Arc4 and the strength of feeling in the village was also commented upon - even 'though it was a wet Monday afternoon, 52 members of the public turned up. District councillor Green abstained from voting

Liz, We are too far away to do much for you, but we are always happy to be kept in touch. That's good news for Cowling |

Well done on gaining the momentum. No mistake that the planned meeting was in the middle of the day when most are at work, and therefore far more difficult to muster any major resistance.
I thought these anonymous flunkies were working for us, not against us?!
Can't help but be left cynical and distrustful.
Well done again, Team Cowling.
