Speed Restrictions
Hello all.
I wonder if anyone agrees that it is time the current 20mph zones through certain sections of Sutton were extended to the whole village? Many many times I have witnessed drivers hurtling through sections of Holme Lane. They accelerate after leaving the bends in front of the park up to the zone in front of the big school.
The other day a van shot down Manse Way, the noise of it made me turn to look, it passed a parked car and I heard an almighty bang. I thought it had hit a child running out across the road (many children play at the bottom of Rowan Garth) but it was actually a couple of ducks striking the windscreen. It made my heart sink to think of what could have happened. Needless to say, the van just carried on regardless.
Does anyone have any thoughts? Could we campaign to have things improved?

I agree completely Dave, nothing would change though until it is policed with speed cameras . |

Well, speed cameras are controversial to some people, but I did think traffic calming humps and extending the 20mph zone would be a good start. Does anyone have any experience of doing this? Who do we ask? Is it the highways agency? The council? Do we need a petition? |

Personally I don't have an issue with them. If you are only doing 20 mph they pose no discomfort. It's true in life, often the majority must take steps to avoid the consequences of the actions of the few, or as you put it, nutters. But if we want our children safe is it not worthwhile?
Signs don't work, there's plenty of evidence for that. In fact, there are signs up already.

I think that the 20mph limit would be better observed if it only applied when the amber school warning lights were flashing as in many areas of Lancashire. It seems totally unnecessary for the limit to apply 20/7, and I agree with Derek that speed bumps are a nightmare. The idiots who ignore speed limits also ignore bumps, and many law abiding drivers annoyingly slow down almost to a stop when going over them. This involves braking, changing down then accelerating again, producing brake pad dust and extra CO2 - none of which will please the green lobby. |

Speed cameras are definitely the answer, but they should be of the type that are able to record the average speed in order to catch those idiots who speed up in between them. Unfortunately they are rather obtrusive and can be difficult to site. No doubt technology will come up with an answer.
Despite speed restrictions in Oakworth, including a 20 mph zone there was a car flipped over onto its roof yesterday between Windsor Road and the Golden Fleece in Oakworth. Beyond belief.

There are no fixed speed cameras in North Yorkshire and we don't want to set a precedent in Sutton, thanks Robin.
The dusk chorus matches the dawn one at the moment, and it's great to see/hear the curlew and lapwings back on the moors. |

Perhaps the Village should consider joining Community Speed Watch, which is run by North Yorkshire Police to help residents tackle speeding and improve road safety. Cononley run the scheme and may be able to advise how successful it is. I am assuming Sutton is not already a member.
North Yorkshire Police currently have 12 'police safety camera vans' and a motorcycle (run by support staff) to cover 6,000 miles of road. Despite their assurance that ... 'We cover hundreds of sites that include villages, towns and other residential areas' ... with over 800 villages in the county a visit by a speed van would appear to be slim.
Of course the removal of double yellow lines and increased on road parking in villages is proven to slow traffic down and that is certainly the case in both Sutton and Sutton Mill.

The roadside parking has definitely slowed the traffic but does it make it any safer. If it does then why no parking in front of the schools. |

I completely agree that speed cameras are not the answer, and I applaud North Yorks for not using them.
I was thinking of the happy face/sad face type used to great effect in East Morton?
On-street parking, following the approved code of practice (Highway code) is also not an issue, but parking right on top of junctions and places where it is quite obviously a danger (like the speed chicane on Bridge Road c/w Gordon St)? Often cars and vans are parked OPPOSITE the Gordon St give way markings! Yet a few yards further up alongside Crofters Mill is empty.
Can we start a conversation? I don't understand why anyone would object to a 20mph limit all the way through the village? We are only talking from the top of Ellers to Boundary Ave and the same from the Cricket Club to The Park. Most of which are too built up and congested to do 30 anyway. Any other road is either through an estate (where no-one should really be doing 30 anyway) or too short to achieve 30mph unless you are driving like a maniac. It might add 30 seconds to a journey, the only people that would bother are emergency services who don't need to obey them anyway?
Think how lovely and calm the village has been during the unfortunate current events... |

Couldn't agree more regarding Bridge Road, vehicles often double parked thus restricting the road to single car width making it impossible to stop at the give way markings. I take your point about the 20 mph on the sections you mention. |

I can't believe this has descended into an explanation on the kinetic energy and mass of Ducks. A duck weighs nowt, it was a glancing blow, and a windscreen takes some breaking (for good reason).
A child would not have walked away from this. I'm sorry you consider such an event a subject for humour. :-( |
