Sutton Clough
Thank you for your message concerning the notices and cyclists in the Clough.
The Parish Council is responsible for the upkeep of the Clough which of course is owned by the village. I will look into the matter of new notices and certainly see that the item of notices and cyclists in the Clough is put on the agenda for the August council meeting.

they are. it's a bridleway. or at least that's what it is on the map.
i know form a previous discussion on here that some people think it isn't a public right of way, and that there may be some grey area, but i'm reasonably sure that it's a right of way.
mind you, do you really want to be dodging the dog mess and dogs off leads who don't do recall? |

No bikes in the clough please (excepting toddlers bikes)....
Those who use the Clough infrequently might think this is a good idea....because they normally only go as far as the levelled and aggregated path which ends a third/half of the way up the Clough. Beyond this point where the path is mud only, would get very very cut indeed....it would also tempt folk to create a course/circuit like a skate board pipe....eroding paths and sides of the Clough....certain paths in the Clough are already boggy enough just with normal walking....
I walk the paths around Sutton/Crosshills/Farnhill every day and though cycling the paths might seem a simple pleasurable pass-time it rips up the paths in no time....disproportionally to that erosion caused by just walking. |

If the parish council do permit cycling in the Clough then I suggest that anyone injured by a cyclist sue the parish council.
When notices displaying ‘No Cycling’ were displayed it did not prevent me having to jump for my life to avoid being run over. On one a occasion the cyclist was a child on the other it was gang of at least 10 men riding mountain bikes racing with there heads down as though taking part in tour de France. On that I was only saved by a quick jump and a loud scream.
Some people walking in the Clough are elderly, some 90+ and many 60+. Younger disabled people use the walk, including some who have the audacity to look healthy. I know the current view in society is that the elderly, infirm and disabled are totally worthless and not even worth being given any consideration.

What about the safety of young children and toddlers? Don’t they matter either? |

One question of clarification, if you'd be so good. By "No Hunting" does it mean "don't ride horses through the Clough after Mr Fox", or does it mean "no shooting things for the pot" ?

If it is a bridleway then its a cycle route. It does show as a bridleway on maps.
Its nice to see people looking for any excuse to keep cyclists out of the clough. If walkers had their way all over the country cyclists would only be allowed on the roads |

it's all about being considerate. if you're using a bridelway then you have to expect horse or bicycles, just as they have to expect walkers/dogs/children playing.
i'm bored of black and white arguments about the clough. it's a bridleway, so it can be used as such. how the people using it behave is another matter.
Craven is severely lacking in bridleways, so the less people are allowed to use, the more they'll use footpaths instead, as a safe, direct way to get about.
some people are scared by cyclists, whatever the cyclist does, some cyclists are inconsiderate. there's nothing you can do about either of those people.
i think a lot of motorists in sutton are inconsiderate and dangerous, but i don't call for them to be taken off the roads. |
