Treat to Workpeople
Rummaging through papers the other day I came across the following report copied from the Keighley News of 12th March 1864:-
'On Saturday, the whole of the hands of Mr John Green, manufacturer, Sutton, and several friends, in all amounting to upwards of 150 persons, sat down to an excellent tea, provided for them by Mr J. Tempest, Gardener's Arms. After tea the party adjourned to an upper room, where dancing and games were carried on with much spirit. This event was in commemoration of the marriage of Mr John Petty, Mr Green's engine driver.'
The Garden's Arms was a beer house in Low Fold. The building was demolished in the 1970's. A three storey structure it had a large top room accessed by an external stone stairway.
John Green lived at Croft House on the Acres and owned Croft Mill in the High Street, also known as Croft Shed. In 1861 he is recorded as a worsted manufacturer, employing 115 hands. His engine driver (the mill was powered by a stationary steam engine), married Miss Sarah Jackson on the 5th March 1864 at Kildwick Church. Mr Green obviously thought highly of his employee.
