SUTTON PARK
My grandfather, Charlie Pritchard, was the park keeper at Sutton Park and I was wondering if anybody had any photos of the park taken in the 1940s or 1950s
that they could post on the website or possibly lend me.
I will scan any photos and make certain they are returned safely.

Charlie Pritchard - fondly remembered as 'Treadwell' because of his steady, methodical gait and his big boots! Sorry Duncan, I don't have any photographs of the park at that time though there are sure to be some around. Boys and girls of my generation used the park a lot, particularly the tennis courts. Does anyone who took part in the Popular American Tennis Tournaments organised by the Barretts, [Frank and Alan] Raymond Clough et al have any photographs to share? |

Duncan, there are a couple of shots of the park from 1950 already in the gallery.
They come under the title 'SOUTH CRAVEN The Official Guide 1950', which is more than half way down the gallery page. |

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the Sutton Park photos.
It ws fascinating reading the old adverts.
I remember quite a lot of the old tradesmen doing work on our house in Eastfirld Place.

The Raymond you refer to was Raymond Whitaker, not Clough. He was the brother of Misses Maggie and Jessie. Although elderly when we played, he was able to beat most of us. He had been injured during his military service and had one leg which caused him problems, but he had ability to predict where the ball was going. He also had a brilliant serve. Talking about the tennis courts, I wonder what happened to the shelter that sat alongside the bottom end. It was one of those with two small rooms for changing and made n excellent retreat when the weather was wet. Anyone know?
Whilst I remember Mr. Pritchard as the Park keeper, the man I think of was a tall, ginger haired chap, who came after the war. He eventually left and took a farm at Steeton. I think he and his wife opened the shop at the bungalow selling sweets and ice cream.

Photographs are out there in abundance. The only trouble is that those who possess them have yet to find the Website. If the likes of you and I keep spreading the word, then eventually they will come on board. Photos in the gallery of the School and the Amateurs along with those of the trips from the Bull, were stirred up by conversations encouraging non users to get involved. It is surprising who comes out of the woodwork.

Another memory lapse! Of course it was Raymond Whittaker, not Clough!
