Leonard Marklew
Hello everbody,
My name is Gillian Marklew-Allen, daughter of Leonard Marklew of the Marklew family clan from Sutton and Crosshills, my father passed away recently and I googled his name not expecting to find it anywhere, but apart from finding a Leonard Marklew who murdered his wife in the village next to me in Norfolk where I now live! I found a mention to my dad on this website, he was the younger brother of Denis and Edgar Marklew, long deceased.
I have very happy memories of Sutton, playing in the timber yard behind rose mount where my auntie Mamie lived, sadly I was very young when my grandmother Marklew died, and dad was rubbish at keeping in touch with his surviving relatives,
However dad used to be in the rambling club in Sutton for many years, so I just thought I'd post that dad's funeral will be on Thursday the 12th of april 2018 at Skipton crematorium at 10.50 a.m. if any of you would like to say goodbye. |

Sorry to read of the death of Leonard,being a member of st Thomas,s rambling club of which Leonard was the treasurer for a lot of years I ejoyed many a good walk with the club (now known as Sutton Walking club)I remember us loosing our way in mist on our way to to Great Gable in the Lakes when he saved the day with an old compass he always carried in his pocket. |

Leonard and I were together in Miss Wilson's class in 1945. I thought that we both went to the Grammar School in Keighley in September of that year, but perhaps I'm wrong because I don't seem to be able to find him on the panoramic school photo taken in 1946. My lasting memory of Leonard will be of him reciting a poem which we all had to learn by heart. The poem was about Napoleon Storming the city of Ratisbon. Leonard had it off pat! He raced through it without hesitation. He drew a breath at the beginning of each verse and rattled on without a pause until he finished the verse when drew another big gulp of air and proceeded to recite the next verse in the same way.

Hi Denis, I've changed the errant questions marks in your post to apostrophes. You appear to be using Safari on an iPad running iOS 11 and there's some sort of character encoding mismatch. I'll see if there's anything I can do on the server to sort it. |

Sad to learn of the death of Leonard Marklew. We were teenage friends in Sutton. He and I stand together among fifth year students in the 1950 Keighley Boys' Grammar School amazing panoramic photograph. We must have been at the Council School at the same time as well, though I don't remember that quite so clearly as Denis.
I know we spent time in the Marklew woodshed at the bottom of West Lane, we played about on the outside steps while Leonard's brothers dealt with the machine that produced packages of sticks for lighting local household fires.
At that time we lived in Hall Way, Sutton. Leonard was among those of a group of boys from West Lane and the Hall estate who spent much time playing and exploring in the hall ruins and its wildly overgrown grounds. We dug winter dens in the field in front of Hall Way and played cricket on an awful pitch in the same field in summer. |
