Book published in 1770 (I think) - MSCCLXX
I have had passed down to me through the family a book which states inside it belongs to Henry Overton of Stothill, Cowling published in 1770. It's in old English and well read and is in poor condition. I think this might be connected to the Rileys/Akrigg family who farmed in the Sutton/Cowling area and were related by marriage into the Hargreaves family? Title: The Death of Legal Hope - The life of Evangelical Obedience - an Essay on Galatians II by Abraham Booth. If any descendants of the Overton family would like to claim it please let me know as I wish to dispose of it and would like to give the family first refusal. |

Janet - if it is only the inscription which relates to Henry Overton, (possibly of Farling Top farm, Cowling) would you please scan or take a photo of it and also the book - and pass on to me via Paul. My ancestor Thomas Binns built Carr Mill at "Harry Carr" which according to records was on Henry Overton's land! Pls. do not dispose of the book just yet! |

Only the inscriptions refer to H Overton. If I have got the generations right, I believe that one of his daughters was married to Doris Rileys mother and another of his daughters was my grandfathers first wife and that they farmed just down from the Pinnacle. This is how the book comes to be in my possession. The book is written in ye olde english and is well read! As requested I have sent the scans sent to Paul. |

Thanks Janet - now got the scans - v. interesting - in the 1846 tithe map notes for Cowling it gives a Henry Overton as a landowner, and William Overton as a tenant - think later on Overtons lived at Farling Top Farm - got to research some more when time! |

Now done some research on Henry Overton(s) - Henry son of Wm. & Tryphena born 10.11.1776, also Henry son of David & Rebecca b.1.2.1836. Also George and Mary - weaver in 1831 - then in 1832 a farmer, then in 1837/40 manufacturer. No info. on Overtons manufacturers in Cowling - any ideas pls? (Did find one or two Overtons in Sutton.) |

If you or anyone else wants to pursue the farming branch of the Overtons, they connect to the family trees of Doris Riley and of the late Annie Akrigg nee Hargreaves who married Tom Akrigg. The Akriggs farm/farmed at Laycock. I'm not sure quite which generation connects them. |

Doris Riley’s paternal grandparents were (I think) Robinson Riley and Sarah née Overton. Sarah was the daughter of David Overton who was the eldest son of Henry Overton of Stott Hill. Although another of David Overton’s daughters (Hannah) married William Hargreaves of Wood Top and his sister (Barbara) married a Stephen Hargreaves, I’m not sure that either of these is the Hargreaves connection referred to. Henry Overton was my 4xG-grandfather - I am descended from one of his daughters via the Feathers of Malsis. I can't lay claim to the book but I would be very interested to have a copy of the scanned page with reference to H Overton. |

Sarah was Doris Riley's mother. William and Hannah were my g great grand parents - there is a pic of them on this Site. Stephen was Williams brother I believe. I sent a scan to Paul for Joan but I don't know if he still has it? I deleted my copy but I could rescan or send you the book if you are doing Overton family history? |
