Young Peoples Fellowship (YPF)
I've seen the photos of the YPF in Winton in the gallery but does anyone have any taken in the middle to late 1960's when I was a member.
I seem to remember seeing some years ago but can't remember who had them. Chris Barsby, if you read this have you any ?.

I think Eddie Pilling was involved in the Winton weekends as the minister of the Baptist church.We have a painting of Winton Baptist Chapel which used to hang on the wall at my mum and dad's and I kept when we cleared my dads house when he died. Dont have any photos though as far as I know. |

Who painted the picture, was it David Binns? If so make sure you look after it.

Alan- there is no signature on the picture itself. Would need to take it out of the frame to see if it is signed on the back. Who is David Binns? There is an inscription on the back of the frame which says, 'Presented to Mr and Mrs Pilling for their work with the Crosshills and District Young Peoples Fellowship'. |

I can remember your father as a tall thin person and well spoken. Alan refers to David Binns the artist but he is better known for his work on wild life and often painted for the, I think it was, the wild life trust and the RSPB. His father Dan Binns painted landscape pictures arround the dales and I would guess it would be Dan that painted Winton Baptist Chapel. |

Mr. Pilling was a charming fellow with a wonderful sense of humour. He was, to me, a man of average height, about 5'8'' but having said that, I am 6'3''. Height does not really matter it is all comparative. The man inside is the governing factor and he certainly measured up. I concede that David paints/ painted wild life but just wanted to see if one of the Binns family was responsible. If so the painting could be of some value. Best of luck, no doubt David will advise you. |

Well hello Nancy (nee Higson, nee Spencer) Wadsworth, yes I do have some photos of Winton in the late 60's some on the green where we all lined up behind the tree after joyc'es Ram ceremony,some down by the bloodstone, not sur who is on them but certainly a 16 year old Barsby and Snowden, and no doubt a Spencer and Higson, also a Bailey and Whittaker to name but a few. I will have to dig them out though as I think they are at home rather than with me out in Saudi. If I find them do you want them posting (could be embarrasing?)
By the way Michael you will know Dan Binns and his wife Edna(I think it was), Davids Mum and Dad they lived two doors up from us, after a lady called Mrs Horsfall's house the the Binn's heading up towards the Gills. I am sure they were still there when you were in Sutton, in fact when I was married the first time Mrs Binns gave me a lovely picture painted by Dan, it was a view from his house looking over the fields towards the baptist chapel (no shealings in those days, all covered in snow and you can make out the trees of the ravenstones, teh trees of teh beck and park and the houses of Holme Lane with the odd crow coming down for some bread - very nice
I doubt though if the Winton Chappel was painted by Dan, I think it is more likely a local artist to Kirby Stephen / Winton |

Michael, I remember your father very well - he had a great influence on my teen age years He even occasionally played tennis with us in the park. When he decided to move to Hucknall I made my decision to be baptised by him. I was indeed the last person he baptised at Sutton.
Incidentally my older sister Christine was one of a batch of teenagers who were part of your father's first baptism at Sutton. Alan you may have been in that batch or were you "done" by Rev Buck?

David,
I was dipped on my own one Sunday evening in 1960, by the Reverend Edmund Pilling. Ithink that he had had enough after me. It was a solo effort. I know that the water filled his wellies after he immersed me. |

You seem to remember it very well - it certainly is a moment (Or even 3 moments counting each dip) that you don't forget.
Yes Edmund Pilling seemed to have touched many teenagers/ early 20's lives in the late 1950's / early 60's
