The main drive, The Park.
Whilst scouring the Keighley News letters last week I was surprised to read the article about the trees alongside the main drive. My immediate reaction was " Is the Health and Safety man adrift in Sutton?" Having passed through the village yesterday, I can now appreciate the enormity of the task. I had no idea that they had grown so tall. The other part of the letter intrigued me though. The installation of lights along the drive. Is the park now left open to general use after dark? All five gates used to closed and locked at dusk and woe betide anyone found within the park afterwards. Time changes everything but I am pleased to see that the Park is still the focal point of the Village life. Keep up the good work and keep it free of vandalism. |

Alan, I also read with interest about the proposed removal of the trees. My immediate thought was one of shock and 'over-reaction' by the health and safety bloke involved, but then on reflection I realised that I'm not really in a position to make a valid judgement cos I live in South Australia and can't see the situation for myself (nowt worst than arm-chair critics !)
Again like you, I was also intrigued by the proposed installation of lights up the main walk-way, because the park gates are (or were) always locked at dusk. I reckon the lights will still look good from a distance and will be visible from outside the fence lines.
Talking of vandalism, I remember in the early 70s when vandals dragged an old car seat across the bowling green one night when the park keeper Brian Middleton was away on holiday. It took months to repair the damage cultivating new grass etc.
Brian's response was to continue locking the park gates at dusk and then let his pet German Shephard off the leash to roam the park all night.
This beast was like the Hound of the Baskervilles and would frighten the bejesus out of me by launching itself onto the inside of the park railings, barking and snarling its murderous gnashers as I would innocently walk along the footpath on my way home from the Kings Arms late at night (damn dog !)
Funnily enough there were no further reports of night time park vandalism for the remainder of Brian's long reign as park-keeper !

The park is still closed after dark, as this is a condition of the current bye-laws.

In answer to Stan, on the 'park trees' section of the forum;
Yes! I agree a more permenant solution is needed rather than wires dangling from trees.
Having discussed this with the Park Keeper, he feels lighting would be beneficial to himself when securing the park and dealing with any intruders at night.
The lighting is also a Health & Safety measure to light up the main avenue for events such as Bonfire Night, the Christmas Carol Services and any other one off event which may take place in the future.
To my knowledge there are no plans to extend the opening hours of the park. |
