Is’nt it a shame.
Woke up this morning to see all this snow and know at my age I am too old to only think of the chaos it will cause,unlike as a child look forward to getting the home made sledge out.
It is therefore a shame the lockdown officially means the kids can only enjoy sledging without their friends getting too close,
It is also a shame that the field at Holme Bridge is not open available for the kids to sledge in,the death of Leonard Thompson and people like him just shows that the present generation due not have much of a community spirit.
To change the subject but not the reason for my rant is’nt it a shame that so little is being put on the forum these days when I got my IPad it was a joy to read all the hoast of letters,if I remember correctly it was easier to put a piece on the forum,this was changed when someone who l would discribe a an off cummed un caused a problem was it not?This is the reason in my opinion that those who are responsible for Face Book have not required all the idiots who put out all the tripe and are allowed to remain

NB.I forgot to include Twitter which I was on for a very short while and l found most of those using it were of a different persuasion to myself.Perhaps I was not educated enough to understand their points of view and as I have always maintained one can be burdened with too much knowledge. |

When the forum was originally set up, comments could be added without the need for a verified username and password. Unfortunately this was eventually abused by a small minority so I had to add the authentication. |

Another reason was that... a local contributor objected to those of us who live overseas getting too much exposure with our comments and reminiscing, and, if I remember rightly the comment was... - if you love the village so much why did you leave - , Hence many of us stepped back and let the locals go for it! Still read it though not as often I have to say.
Still have the memories and still love the village and villagers.

Where have you been for the past weeks. The website has been dead without you all. I was beginning to wonder if you were victims of the Covid virus. The current residents of the village seem to have taken to another website. Keep in touch and keep submitting the memories.

Well Alan, down here we have been luckier than most when it comes to Covid, but still not allowed to travel yet. So pleased to read that the UK is coming out of the darkness after such a long time.
Memories fade a lot when you are not being reminded of those special years. Plus, there are fewer of us that remember the 'old' village.
Friday or Saturday night dances at St Thomas' Hall - not even called that any more. Dancer numbers doubled after 10pm when the pubs closed!! Mind you most of those mere males stood in a group at the back!!
Walks after Chapel on Sundays with YPF. Whitsun walk round the village. Sledging down the hill in Thompsons field, or Ingham's 'down Sutton' or the 'Mill Hill. They appeared quite steep and daring at the time.
Well we didn't have phones in our pockets then, but arrangements were made ahead of time - and we stuck to them. Those were the days my friend!!

Hello Brenda and Alan.
Glad to hear you are both well.
Alan and I are fine, have good neighbours, Josette arrived with 4 kilos of tomatoes this afternoon. Grapes in a day or two!,
Covid has not been a major problem here but we all wear masks in town, shops and public buildings.
We have had a hot dry summer but rain tonight.
Can't think why but Glusburn institute was my dancing venu. Something to do with .Lance and Millie Feather taking us in their lorry!
Sledging was down West lane, few cars in those days.

Jane, are you related to Ken Chatterton who had 2 boys (if I remember correctly), the youngest was called John? Ken worked at Horsfall's Mill, I think he was the engineer in charge of maintenance and the general upkeep of the mill and Glusburn Institute. They lived at the bungalow called, at the time, Cornerways at the side of the mill by the garages on Colne Road. |
