T AND M BAIRSTOW CENTENARY 1828-1938
I was very interested to see the gallery photos of Bairstow's trip to the Glasqow Exhibition in 1939. My mum and dad, Hilda and Jack McHenry, were on the trip, but I can't see them on the photograph. I still have an drinking etched glass that mum and dad brought back from the exhibition. I was 2 years old at the time, so I must have been left in the care of my grandparents ( Charlie McHenry lived on King Edward Street and was caretaker at Sutton Infants School, near Holme Bridge.)

Is it possible to take a picture of glass and email it to Suttonweb? I would be interested to see it. Thanks. |

Hi, Joan, I have sent Paul a photo of "an etched drinking glass", not of "an drinking etched glass", as I first decribed it. I am sure Mr Walker, Miss Wilson and Mrs Belton taught me to write better English than that !!! |

Did anyone see the photo in the Keighley News on Thursday 13th March in the Memory Lane slot of the Bairstow's Workers gathered at the Cricket field in 1938 watching the Centenary Ceremony. They are all looking at the scene of the first photo submitted to this site from the Cowling Web site. Just a coincidence or what?? Perhaps the lady who sent it in has had a peep at the Sutton Web Site. |

Yes just put message on Bateman topic, then seen the above. Do hope the lady from Eastburn who sent it in will allow Suttonweb to put it on here! It is a great photo, and perhaps some of crowd will be recognised? |

Have spotted my grandfather (William Firth) on 2 photos on this website. He's 3rd from right on the back row of the 1928 Bairstow Overlookers. He would have been 38 then.
I have another photo of long-serving employees from Bairstow's in 1954. I have sent this to Paul, and there is also a copy of this on Keighley Boys' Grammar School website. The link is http://www.kbgs.com/suttonmillemployees1954.jpg

On the photo Long Serving Mill Employees 1954 my grandfather, John William Clough, is second from right back row. He retired somewhere about 1955 or 1957 and received a 9 inch bush black and white television which we all (the family) had to go and watch. All I can remember about that was that there were all these horses running races and I thought it was boring and thought television was not worth all the fuss! I was told that it was one of the first televisions in the area. My grandfather had been in the pioneer corp in WW1 and was his job to build the railways that carried the supplies to the front line. I still have 2 of the maps he used daily.
On the middle row, second from the right is Chrisie Tofton (with the scarf) and she attended Glusburn Baptist Chapel.
My mother thinks that the lady, third from left, middle row is Irene Bland.
Hope this stirs some more memories. |
