Additions to the Gallery
Re recent additions showing Mggie and Jessie Whittaker. The captions are wrong - Maggie is Jessie and Jessie is Maggie - if you follow what I mean. |

I believe the surname of the "not known" lady on the last of the Maggie / Jessie photos was Overend and I think her first name was Sarah-Ann (spelling???). No doubt Brenda or the Brothers Pickles will be able to confirm or otherwise. |

The answer to my question above is in the Gallery, under the Sutton Baptist Choir collection. The "not known" lady referred to above is Mary-Ann Overend and she features in the "centre forward" position in the group photograph with names underneath.
I recall Dorothy Midgley's name being mentioned recently. For reference, she is stood next to Mary-Ann on the photograph. |

What a wonderful collection of Whittaker photos.
Denis is correct when he says that Miss Maggie and Miss Jessie are named each as the other. Howard is correct in his naming of the other ladies in the other photos. Brenda will no doubt confirm. |

I agree the missing name is Mary Ann Overend - the same lady on the Baptist choir photos 1954/55. Gosh those photos bring back such a lot of memories especially Miss Maggie and Miss Jessie - (Miss Jessie with the white hair pulled back.) Also, to be correct - there was only one 'T' in Whitaker. I think every child in the street (and there were many) has sat on the wall or the bench. |

I always liked Miss Jessie! The first time I remember meeting her was when she welcomed me into the infants class in Sunday School which was held in a room off the big hall at the side of the stage. I'd be no more than 4 years old at the time. At the beginning of the war, the big hall and that room were requisitioned by the army and housed, I think it was, soldiers of The Royal Horse Artillery. The room seemed to be quite separate from the rest of the Sunday School and really, all I can recall about the room is that hanging from the wall there was a large reproduction of 'I am the Light of the World' the original painted by William Holman Hunt. Miss Jessie, who looked after the infants class always had her hair piled on top and I can never remember her wearing a dress with other than a high Edwardian neckline. Yes, I always liked Miss Jessie. She seemed to be less authoritarian than Miss Maggie. Some twenty years after I first met her and had been discharged from the army, I was courting my to be wife who did not live in Sutton. Miss Jessie, always with an interest in her former pupils, asked me if my fiancé was a Christian. I replied that she was Church of England. I think that Miss Jessie thought that C of E was OK, but Baptist would have been better! |
