Whilst hunting for something else I stumbled on this photo -

Michael Pilling - you could be interested as your dad is featured - also I am not sure that all of the names are correct for Sutton lads. I hope the link works OK, it is from the website - www.oneguyfrombarlick.co.uk

Hello Brenda,
I'm perhaps not the brightest bunny in the warren with computers. I've tried several tmes with this one but can't find it. If the pic' is 1963 I'm probably on it, and might be able to identify some other Boys' Brigade members at that time. Some, including self, came from Glusburn in those days. Big trek.
I can remember Eddie Pilling well, and Michael as a little lad. Sorry about that one Michael. |

Hi Brenda and Melvin, Photo was taken at Penmaenmaewr camp 1963. Not a very flattering photo of myself, always had the knack of not smiling when they were taken. Has anyone out there got any photo's of the BB camp in Littleham, Devon the following year? |

I logged into the Barlic site (very interesting) as I lived there for a while prior to moving to NZ, just opposite the old Silent night factory (Long Ings Lane). I was working at Mark Nutters in Skipton and they ran a 12 seater bus to bring workers from Barlic to work. My next door neighbour was an instrument/ strain guage technician at RR, Ken???? Had a bit of a limp if I remember correctly. I know the old weaving shed, the looms would have been the Lancashire over pick single shuttle looms, possibly Pillings of Colne. This could stir a few old "Tacklers" up. In Yorshire they were known as weaving overlookers. |

Thanks for the photo Brenda. I remember we had at least one holiday in Penmaenmawr with Peter and Rita Barsby and their 3 daughters. Don't think we stopped in the tent on the photo!!

Hi Brenda, and Hello Jess! Happy days, except for the suppertime cocoa, a description of which isn't fit for this website. I hope the grass is still OK in that field, if it still is a field. As I remember most of the brown liquid went under the table. Same happened at Exmouth the year after. I never knew the place was called Littleham Jess. I always remembered it as being called Sandy Bay, that is if we are talking about the same camp...Somewhere between Budleigh Salterton and Exmouth?
Sorry to say that I have no group photos of that camp. The only ones that I do have somewhere are one of "Fred", Rae Elrick, on Latrine duty armed with a galvanised bucket, don't ask. One of the coach driver who's name was Arnold (Messrs Plants Coaches, Blackburn) Arnold had a full sized brass bedstead in his tent,
(funny, did we sleep on the floor?) I know we did some barmy things in those days but how the devil did we get that down there? The last picture was one of Floppy trying to sort his bedding out, but alas I'm blowed if I can find these at the moment.
About three or four years ago Earby Boys' Brigade had a reunion, I went, and there were some of the group photos there. I think some of them might have belonged to Roger Wormwell, I bump into him occasionally, next time I'll try and remember to ask him if he might do me some copies. Or failing that I could try Michael Cowgill.
Thanks for bringing this up Brenda, all the best Jess, and same to others on the photo. Names seem pretty accurate but am afraid I can't name the "unknown"
PS. One humourous thing at the exmouth camp. I reported "sick" to Hugh Lusk after threats were made about the aroma from my feet during the night, poor Hugh in his confusion ( I don't recall anyone having ever reported sick) gave me something containing Senna...don't ask me! I'm still trying to figure it out. Ask messrs Elrick and Remde. |
