ORIGINAL PRAM RACE
The original pram race in aid of Muscular Dystrophy was first held in November 1974 - instigated I think by the parents of the late Robert Marklew who suffered from it. Many of you will remember the great fun everyone had, the team spirit, and of course the contributions to M.D. funds. The prams started at the Black Bull Cowling, then Bay Horse, Dog & Gun, Working Mens, Con. Club, Old White Bear, Junction, White Bear Eastburn, then Sutton Bay Horse, Black Bull but not quite sure about Kings Arms! You can imagine the state of some of the finalists! Very soon some of the old photos which have been submitted by Mrs. & Mrs. B. Dolphin of Sutton should appear on this and our Cowling sites! If anyone knows the whereabouts of the silver salver presented by Sir Richard Attenborough, or the rosebowl and tankard presented by actress Anita Harris please contact site owner Paul, Mr. & Mrs. Brian Dolphin, or Joan@Cowlingweb. Thanks. |

Thanks Paul, think the photos look great and might interest a few people in the area? Have now realized from the last photo there might also be a trophy somewhere, besides the salver, rosebowl and tankard (the photo with Anita Harris was not clear enough to put on site.) There was a resurrection of the pram race a few years ago, but no longer don't think. The original rules were that there had to be a "baby" in the pram all the way! |

Remarkable shots Joan, I’d forgotten about the rabbit-skin hooded Parka’s we used to wear – warm but totally ineffective in wet weather as the coats quickly became saturated and then smelled a bit pongy after they’d dried out on the school radiators!
Little did the beer-swilling ‘babies’ in the prams realize that 36 years later their images would be on a web-page available for viewing by 6.8 billion people! |

Hi Joan You certainly bring back memories. We were in the first Pram Race that is Neil, Bob Robinson and me in the pram. It rained that day but who cared? We finished at the White Bear at Eastburn and when we got there we just tipped the pram upside down to let all the water out. We had a superb day but finished a bit tipsy after calling in 10 pubs!! but all for a good cause. The second year we entered as the Old Woman who lived in a Shoe. In 1976 we entered quite a few prams from the Dalesway as we were the licensees at the time and somewhere I have cuttings from both the Craven Herald & Keighley News and if I can find them I will let you have them. We also attended the presentation nights at the Keighley Variety Club and saw Sir David Attenborough and Anita Harris.

Hi Joan, Margaret Marchant here. I used to to in the pram races with Joyce Gill (Gilly to everybody) and Sheila Hayton. We won the rose bowl one year and it was kept on one of the shelves at the Bay Hosre at Sutton, Joyce and myself worked behind the bar there. It was the year that Sir Fred Truman presented the prizes and I rather think that that might have been the last year of the pram race before it was resurrected. As far as I can remember the rose bowl was there for quite some time. I doubt it is still there as the pub has had many changes since then. Good to see the pictures. Gilly and myself along with one of the Bay Horse customers entered the first one and there we are on the photos. |

Nice to hear there is some interest - though all credits should go to Sylvia Dolphin (nee Clues) - the photos will eventually go into Cowling Moonrakers storage for future use - so anything else in connection with the Pram Race we would be pleased to include. |

Thanks Margaret - would that be Margaret (nee Moore) by any chance? Joan (nee Binns) here - thought it might be you on one of the photos? So maybe the souvenirs were dispersed around pubs which took part in pram races? I am told that a few years ago they were at the Bay Horse, Cowling, and a previous landlord took them out of storage and cleaned them up - and they were displayed for a while, but no sign now don't think. (Super photos of Fun Day!) |

Hi Joan - Yes it is Margaret Moore. Sorry I could be of no more help. The rose bowl that we won might even have been an individual prize and not one that would have been presented yearly. It was only a small one as I recollect. |
