A new local business
Hello, I would like to hear your thoughts, good or bad, on a possible business idea for the local area. I am hoping to open an old fashioned sweet shop selling all the old favourite weigh outs as well as a small section of old fashioned toys/games and gifts. The shop will be a real trip down memory lane with a warm nostalgic feel, taking 'some of us' back to our childhoods. I would especially like to hear from anyone who remembers any similar sort of shop in the area from times gone by. Thank you |

Good luck to you Tracie - I hope it is a success. I remember we used to have quite a few sweet shops in Cross Hills and Glusburn, where most of the sweets were weighed out. There was Smith's on the Main Street next to what is now a Handbag Shop. Also "Blind Jimmies" next to the Library Car Park in what is now the chiropodist. I seem to remember you went down a few steps into the shop and he also came down some steps from his living quarters but he always knew where everything was. Then there was Hudson's sweet shop opposite "Charlie's Picture House" down Station Road and one opposite the Filling Station run by the Crossley sisters. In Glusburn there was Coopers opposite Shutt Lane near the Institute. I also remember a wooden hut down at the level crossings and he used to open on Sunday mornings, which in those days, was looked upon by many as a sin. Of course Sutton had many sweet shops including Humphreys, Filkins, Hendersons, Polly Ogdens, Willis's, Inghams and others which we have mentioned in previous articles. Once again All the Best. |

Ah!....Polly Ogden's! I used to buy Lee's "Snowballs" there when I was a kid. Got some in Morrison's a couple of weeks ago----less than half the size they used to be! Good luck to you Tracie. |

Thank you so much for the first 2 replies. Wow didn't realise there had been quite so many sweet shops over the years. I think 'Blind Jimmies' and 'Polly Ogdens' sound the best just going on the names alone. Thank you also for the good luck wishes. Will keep you posted on any developments. |
