High Street again
Hi - called at Sutton today - what a wealth of history around the High Street area? - from old photos - no. 7 was a shop owned by G. Simons ( the same family as now?) - 5 chimneys in that section of the street then - does anyone know what happened to nos. 1, 3 and 5 High St. as we couldn't find any trace? Will also check with my old Sutton books. Thanks. |

My recollection is that Gladys Ingham ran the shop in the 1950's. Her husband, Willie Ingham, had a butchers shop in Crosshills. When Gladys left in the early 1960's Joyce and Joe Hannam took over and remained there for a number of years before Sylvia took it - I never knew her surname but the shop was known locally as Sylvia's. I don't believe she kept the shop long and it became a house following closure about the mid 1970's.
The great thing about the shop when I was a boy was that it had a beech nut chewing gum dispensing machine outside at the side of the door - sweets after hours!

As a child I remember going to the shop when it was owned by Mr and Mrs Wright. It was a sweet shop and grocery.
Gladys Ingham married Ivan Spence. She did open a shop at Steeton, where they lived but I think it was Willie Ingham's wife Mary who ran the High Street Shop at the top of Sutton,
presumably after the Wrights retired.

I have fond memories of the frozen orange Jubbly I used to buy from Hannams on a hot day. They used to last me all they way to Sutton Tops when I walked home from school. |

Found that in 1911 George 26 and Emma 27 Simons lived at no. 2 Kings Court (2 rooms), Edward Boocock and family lived at no. 3 Kings Court. Therefore if its the same G. Simons he had the shop a bit later on? |

I lived at 9 High Street from 1937--late 1940s. The shop nos. 5 and 7 at that time was owned by Wilfred Oscar Wright and his wife Sally through the war years and rationing. The next owners were Willie and Mary Ingham. Next it was Sylvia Snooks followed by Bob and Jean Goude who converted the shop to living accommodation in the 1970s. Sorry I cant give you any exact dates or any information on 1 and 3. There is a big garden at the side of the shop, maybe some houses were demolished? |
