Letters of thanks
I have just read the letters posted in 'Gallery' - what a tearful journey that was! It is a wonderful story in itself -
- to have an employer to show such feeling, gratitude and generosity, to these men who had left Bairstow employment to serve their country but also
- to read in a few short sentences how committed the enlisted men were to their King and Country. And, their appreciation to Bairstow's.
Gosh how attitudes have changed over the years, for many many reasons, but such gut wrenching words, few as they were, makes one remember with extra vigour, what was given on OUR behalf, by so many committed people. Maybe it is a symptom of 'too many birthdays' that the appreciation of men who went to war and women who took their places in all walks of life, is such a thankful and sad reality by such as me, in spite of the passages of time.

Hi Brenda That is the same reaction that Yvonne and I had to reading the letters when we found them. It became even more emotional when we found which of the men didn't return when they expressed such hope for the future.
On the other hand James Bairstow shows himself in an entirely different light in our current research.

Indeed, how attitudes have changed over the years Brenda. This very thought regularly crossed my mind when I was researching the WW1 'Fallen' several years ago.
Anyway, these letters are such a great find. I'm always amazed at 'what is out there' waiting to be discovered!
