Group at the Pinnacle.
The pinnacle is not Sutton Pinnacle but Cowling. Could that be why the faces are unfamiliar. Look at the sides of the pinnacle, they slope. Sotton pinnacle is straight sided. Also the doorway is missing. |

Yes we know it was taken at Cowling Pinnacle (which is in fact in Sutton, but we don't like to admit that), but wonder if anyone knows any face in the group, as we are trying to find out just what the group was (probably a church or chapel outing, or even a naturalists society walk?) Maybe Doris Riley would have some idea?

Would you Christmas Eve it ? All these years and I never realized that Cowling pinnacle was in Sutton. 2 pinnacles for one village, a bit greedy but we’ll claim em ! |

Hi Alan - I purposely referred to it as just "the Pinnacle" as, although it's known as Cowling Pinnacle, or Wainman's Monument, it is several yards on the Sutton side of the boundary stone. If I recall what Doris Riley said correctly, the Wainman family was from Carr Head and paid something like a shilling a year to have the monument in Sutton.
The photo has already been published on the Cowling website and drawn a blank, so I added it to the gallery to see if any Suttoners recognise anyone in the group.

I suppose that I am being churlish but the words, "The Pinnacle" on Sutton web site, to me refer to Sutton Pinnacle. Cowling pinnacle, although within the boundary of Sutton Parish is something which we, Sutton born and bred, do not talk about. It's a bit like Glusburn claiming the "Dog and Gun". Let both Cowling and Glusburn dream on. Just out of curiosity, does the Parish Council still collect the rent? |

Hi Alan. I always think of the pointy one as the Pinnacle and the one with battlements as the Tower, but to avoid any confusion I've amended the gallery page and referred to it as Wainman's Pinnacle.
Take heart in the fact that Ross and Anita of the Dog & Gun always state their address as:
The Dog & Gun
Colne Road
Malsis
Sutton-in-Craven.
I've often wondered why the address for Malsis School doesn't mention Sutton, but have discovered that according to the Royal Mail, the address for Malsis School is:
Malsis School
Cross Hills
BD20 8DT.
The Lodge, however, is addressed as:

Sutton-in-Craven
KEIGHLEY
BD20 8DS.

Slight digression - now the path and gateways/stiles are much improved, along the top from the pepper pot to the salt pot, why are there still boulders to prevent vehicles going up on to the level part at the Sutton end from crag road - (very nice views there, especially for handicapped and non-walkers)? Wonder if the area has been abused or something? Also, who funded all the work, as the car park at the back of "Cowling Pinnacle" could do with tidying up - however, suppose we are lucky that the land owner is kind enough to allow anyone to park there at all.

That's correct Alan. Irene is fit and well...she has lived in Skipton since she got married, and has several grandchildren. At the moment she has no computer so has no idea who the girl is....she can't remember who was sitting next to her in 1947 (must be her age!!) |
