New Home Page photo of stone with hole through
From your new home page photo which looks like it might be taken in your lovely Sutton Clough - I am interested in the stone with the hole in - which could be what is left of an old gatepost maybe? We had a couple of similar stones in the Gill Top/Gill Beck area, Cowling (got photos) until lately when they disappeared or were incorporated in the new Berry Bottoms Bridge foundations? - I was told the holes were used for rope making for the old Gill Bottom rope and twine mill - sometimes for making large ropes for use in the Navy! Don't know if this is true or not, but got a book on Micklethwaite Nr. Bingley, which shows "warp peg holes" in stones in walls at road side.

Hi Joan, yes it was taken in the Clough. I was wondering about the hole when I took it, there are some ruins/foundations of old buildings near to it. I'd be interested to read any comments.

Warp peg holes similar to the ones you mention would only have been a couple of inches wide at the most & had sticks inserted into them. These were used to wind warps before they were set up on a loom. At a guess I would say the hole in the stone in the Clough was simply a way to secure a gate with a chain or rope. |
