Jean Smith
Does anyone have any information about Jean Smith, maiden name possibly Walmsley, who will be in her 70s? Her cousin Maureen Ham nee Reynolds wonders if she is still living in Sutton |

Dear Jacky,
Do you know where Jean Smith used to live? There used to be someone of that name at 38 Main Street until about 1974 or 1975. Around that time her husband was involved in a bad road accident - he might even have died as a result, I'm not sure - and they moved to another part of the village. This Jean Smith was around until maybe three or four years ago - it could be more or it could be less - then I think she went into a residential home or a nursing home, where I'm fairly sure she died. Sorry that's a bit vague, but I only really knew her to say hello to and never had an address for her after she left Main Street. For a long time after she'd left Main Street, however, a card came for her every Christmas with no return address on it, so we could neither pass it on to her or let the sender know she'd moved.
Hope that's of help - or, of course, it could be a completely different Jean Smith that you're looking for.
Kind regards, Hazel |

Hazel, I remember the Jean Smith you are referring to. She had 3 sons, Phillip (killed in a motorbike accident at the TT races on the Isle of Man in the early 80s), Gary & Timothy.
As you mention they moved from Main Street in 1975 to a house on the Hall Estate. As you pass under the arched gateway and turn right it was about the 5th or 6th house on the right hand side.
Her husband survived the horrific car crash you refer to but was in a bad way as a result thereafter. He eventually died maybe 12 years later, I’m pretty sure as a result of complications from the crash years earlier.
Jean continued to live at the house on Hall Estate and yes, I’m almost certain I heard she passed away, maybe 5 or 6 years ago.
Incidentally Jacky, this is the same Jean Smith you are referring to. I checked on Ancestry at births as follows, I clearly remember Gary’s birthday was either May 29th or 30th 1960, he was a mate of mine in the same class at primary school.
Name: Gary T Smith Mother's Maiden Surname: Walmsley Date of Registration: Apr May Jun 1960 Registration district: Staincliffe Registration county: Yorkshire |

I used to be Jeans neighbour up Hall Way. I would like to let you know that Jean is still alive, and residing in Oakfield Residential Home in Nelson. Jean moved there a few years ago. Gary no longer lives in the village, however I spoke to him last night, 28th, and he says she recognises him as the person who brings her the milk shakes she enjoys so much. He says that she has just had an operation on her hip after suffering a fall, but is doing well. If I receive any furthur news of Jean I will post it on the forum. |

Hi Angela, glad to hear that Jean is still alive although clearly not in the best of health.
Good to hear Gary is visiting & treating her with delicious milk shakes. Please say hello to Gary for me when you next see him. He & I go back a long way having started primary school together aged 5.
I actually knew Gary before we started school because he used to lob bricks over into the nursery playground from where he lived on Main St when he was about 3!
We were great buddies in our early teen years and got up to all sorts of mischief. His Dad used to have an allotment down Bridge Rd with a large shed. We’d sit in there on an evening with as many gals from school as we could coax, guzzling Woodpecker Cider bought from John Roberts shop.
We both had paper rounds at the same time, and then when we were 14 we wrote a note of resignation to Mr Siddle and pushed it through the post office letter box. We then ‘ran away’, hitch-hiking all the way to London to see the bright lights. I saw bright lights alright when our Dad’s had to drive all the way to Tottenham Court Police Station in London to pick us up a couple of days later!
We then had to offer groveling apologies to Mr Siddle and beg for our paper rounds back, which we both got back. |

Hi Andrew, I'll tell you we speak better than that so called false red head PM! My Dad used to pick up his Woodpecker Cider on Fridays on his way home. He had no idea it was an alcoholic cider for many years. Yes it was a well known helper prior to the local Dances! |
