earlier this year there was some discussion on the origin of Sheilings. I suggested it was probably connected with sheep, possibly a corruption of shearlings.I have recently tried to find why Wensleydale should be named so when in fact it is the Ure which runs through the Dale.
On the web site www.thenortheast.fsnet.co.uk it states that Sheilings is an ancient name for Shepherds Hut.The sheep connection was correct if not entirely accurate

Whilst not exactly an answer, http://www.ramsdale.org/dalr.htm has a reference to "Malhamdale" being used to refer to the upper reaches of the Aire valley around Malham, well to the north-west of what we'd normally consider "Airedale".

As such, it might be that "Wensleydale" referred to that part of the Ure valley around Wensley - something which as a name might just have stuck.
