Leo's Junk Shop Crosshills
Many older residents will recall Leo's junk shop up the side of Riley's Bakers and demolished to make way for the Coop and car park. Does anyone remember his surname? He was east European, born in Poland (I think). He told me that he was from a circus family and in his youth had been an acrobat and on the flying trapeze, but following a fall and back injury had turned to training and running a monkey troop in the circus. He had a number of photos of his troop in the old shop and still kept a small monkey at the shop, which used to sit on his shoulder. He lived in Steeton, in a house later demolished to widen the road at Steeton Top and was a regular at Elmer's Sale Rooms - if items didn't sell Elmer would say, "Well give us a couple of bob for it Leo". After the shop closed in Crosshills he opened one in Cowling for a number of years. I should think that he died towards the end of the 1970's.

A few people remember Leo quite well. His wife was called June Denareo (not sure of spelling) who had been a trapeze artist and later on she drove the van for Freegate Foundry in Ickornshaw, Cowling (still there) and lived at no. 20 Nan Scar. Leo had been a clown and a high wire artist and had had a tragic fall. He had led a full life and his humour was always evident. Thanks for info. Jean Wearmouth, Ken Edgar snr. and Maureen Howson agreed he kept a monkey. Wonder where his photos got to?

Joan,
Follow this link for parishes within Staincliffe for a possible burial but, of course, cremation would likely link to Skipton or Keighley.

Thanks, will do. With a name like that - Leo was possibly of Catholic Religion?
