Then and Now, part 1 (History Section)
Hi Robin, just loved reading 'Then and Now' this is what memories are made of. I remember riding my tricycle to Ivan's shop when Raymond Ridsdale worked there and when there was no danger from road traffic.
My granddad, Leonard Davy, told me of going to a shop on Fall Bridge when he was a child on an errand to buy ammonia for his mother who had uttered the words 'Whatever you do don't take the top off and sniff it'. When he came to and picked himself off the floor he got a good telling off.

To all those who have contributes to this item in the History Section, a massive Thank you. Memories flooded back. I especially remember Zeke's cottage and can verify the tale about the creel in the room with the table attached. I along with my cousin and brother, used to have to drive cows from Oakworth on a Sunday morning to our field at the bottom of Crag Lane. One Sunday the lead cow of about four or five, decided to enter Zeke's garden. As his door was open they all went in and out at the back. I got the job of getting them back out and into West Lane. I don't know what frightened me the most. The thought of having to go in or the sight of Zeke ranting.
I also submitted a poem with a photograph of the bus stop at the bottom of Ash Grove, taken in the 1950's. this shows the view up the main street, and is on the website.
Lastly, wasn't Mr. Ridsdale called Bob and not Raymond?
I'm now returning to the pictures to stir up some more memories.

Hi Alan, Raymond was Bob's son. I too remember Bob with his mobile shop doing the rounds of Sutton - the olden-days equivalent to Tesco's delivery of today but with the added service of the latest village news. |
