Grave Robbers, Sutton Baptist graveyard.
Thieves have stolen three very heavy kerbstones from around the grave of my ancestors, Wm and Ann Nutter, where they had lain undisturbed for over 100 years. There are many neighbouring graves missing stones in this area unaffected by subsidence. The matter, accompanied by photographic evidence, has been reported to Cross Hills police and the Minister. This is not the work of mischievous children as to accomplish this theft would require lifting gear and vehicular access. Anyone with information please contact Cross Hills police, PCSO Simon Thornton and /or Reverend Rob Harris. |

Hi Yvonne, I have only just seen your message. We look out onto the Bar Chapel graveyard, Cowling, and a few years ago witnessed stone flags being stolen from graves - when we took a look around we realized the culprit had tried to lift flagstones from several more graves and left them severely damaged - the police spent a lot of their precious time on this, and we did have photos for proof - long story, but in the end he was convicted at another incident - one of the sons of the grave digging firm who STILL work in MANY of our local graveyards ????so he was already familiar with the sites. There was also at least one grave seriously damaged at Cowling Hill and others in Lancs. Lately barrel type topstones have been stolen from a wall in front of us - many years ago I also witnessed stone vases being lined up ready for putting in a van - when the culprit saw me he fled in his van. WHO IS RECEIVING THE STONE ?? Around the same time as our first episode, lead was stolen from the church roof and also the school on approx. 5 separate occasions! |
