Willie Hargreaves, killed in WW1
I would like to express my appreciation to Andrew Monkhouse for the wonderful work he has done compiling individual booklets on soldiers killed during the Great War. After hearing about a thank you letter from Willie Hargreaves which has been displayed on a notice board in Sutton Park, I decided to search for the letter on the internet. (Willie Hargreaves was my father's brother.) With my daughter's help, I not only found the thank you letter, but I was also thrilled to find Andrew's booklet about Willie. What a bonus! Thank you so much, Andrew. I've also been wondering whether anyone has any information on the war widows. I wonder whether anyone has any information on Doris Hargreaves (nee Riley), Willie's widow. The only references I can find to Doris are in relation to her husband and her brother (who was also killed in the war). I wonder whether she survived the trauma of the war and whether she re-married. |

Hi Kathleen, once the 1921 UK census data is released we should have quite a bit more information on WW1 war widows. I think we will be able to access that data in around 6 years time in 1920.
In the meantime I'm pretty sure that somebody (I just can't think who at the minute) is currently working on collating photos/information of the families of those from Sutton who served during WW1.
Websites such as GenesReunited and Ancestry also allow members to compile their own family trees, so I've often managed to pick up snippets of valuable information this way. I'll have a sniff around and see if I can find anything additional on Doris Hargreaves (nee Riley).
Glad you're happy with the profile on Willie Hargreaves. It needs updating as more pictures of Willie have surfaced since the file was uploaded onto this website. I will get around to doing this shortly :-) |

With regard to Doris Hargreaves she did remarry and many of her family still live in Sutton. |

Hi Paul, who would this have been? There's a couple of marriage entries for a Doris Hargreaves:
1. Marriage in 1924 to Mr Lenton in the Skipton district 2. Marriage in 1920 to Mr Jones in the Keighley district

Thank you Andrew and Paul for all the information. (I am still a novice at this and am very excited by how easy it is to get and share information on the internet. Having said that Andrew, I appreciate how much research you have obviously put into your booklets on the war dead.)
I have noticed one piece of information though in the booklet about Willie Hargreaves which puzzles me. Willie was killed on 24th June 1917 but the letter written by Captain Holland informing his wife of his death was dated 26 May 1917! Do you know whether this was the captain's mistake or whether it was a typo by the Craven Herald?
I was very interested to learn that somebody in the village is collating photos/information from families of those from Sutton who served during WW1. My father, Allan Hargreaves, also served during the war, so my grandparents had 2 sons in the army. I have a number of old family photos which I would be happy to share. I assume that any army photos of Willie would have been passed down to Doris Hargreaves's decendants. I have 2 photos of Willie, pre-war, when he was a keen football player. I also have a medal which Willie won playing football, it is inscribed 'Sutton United A.F.C. W. Hargreaves'.
I will be very interested to see the new photos of Willie when you update his profile. I am sure you will check the features very carefully, but I have found 2 photos recently which have claimed to be him but were not. One turned out to be his wife's brother. |

Andrew, the correct entry would be the one relating to Jones. |
