the knott farm
i wonder if any one can help me, i am looking for information about the knott farm on sutton lane, my family lived there in the early fifties, would like to see any photos and find out how old the farm actually is
any information would be appreciated

I have lived in and arround the village since the early fifties and thought it was Austin Pigills family of farmers who lived there then. Austin used to deliver his milk with horse and cart until one day the wheel and axle broke whilst negotiating the tight bend from West Lane into North Avenue. At that time North Avenue and Hall Avenue was a rough road made with stones and deep `pot holes' made by the passage of vehicles (not many in those days) and the washing away with rain. After that he had to buy a motor vehicle and deliver with that. I do not know how many children Austin had but I think he had a daughter called Jane and I think she still lives in the Sutton area. Austin had a brother, Tim, who had a butchers shop in High Street. It was up the steps in a house opposite Lister Hill. He later moved the shop to another house that he converted into a larger shop on the corner of High Street and Rose Wood Square next door but one to a bakers shop in Rose Wood Square on the opposite corner to Millie Bird's shop where you could by 25 marbles for 6d (2.5p in todays money).
I could reminisce for ages, but hope this gives you something to refer to.

yes mr pigills did live in the farm at that time i think my grandparents rented the other house off him until about 56 when they moved to eastburn my sister has memories of living there but it was before i was born, we were wondering how old the farm actually is |

There was a dwelling on that site in 1853 called Knot House, it could have been the resdience of the quarry manager because there looks like an access route to Knot Hill Quary from the house. If you go onto www.old-maps.co.uk and search for Sutton-in-Craven you will find Sutton and Sutton Mill as it was in 1853. |
