Social History 1800s e.g. Employment Housing/Population of SuttonAden
I am doing to some family research and I was wondering if anyone has any documented facts about Sutton employment/employers (apart the mills) eg cobblers, blacksmiths, builders and also how many houses/farms there were in Sutton/Aden area from about 1800 up to the present date?

Janet,
I posted a note at the beginning of December last year relating to farms [sizes, tenants etc..] in Sutton. It proved to be a damp squib - nobody expressed an interest in the subject whatsoever. Check it out and see if there's anything in the note that might be of help to you in your research. And tell me, are you related to Noah Hargreaves?

Try GENUK1:Kildwick, which gives (or did give) 1822 Baines Directory trades and professions for all the area, or Kelly's Directory, censuses, Sutton history books, library etc. Looks like you might have a relative on the latest message Janet?

Sorry Dennis cant find your Dec data from last Dec but farm tennant/owners info would be really useful. Despite being awash with information, although I have heard of Noah, I can't current link him to my Hargreaves family.
Thanks Joan, some of the info I was interested in is there but not in the form I was hoping for.
Does anyone know what Keighley Library is like for accessing old info?

Hello Janet, Have you tried the Sutton Tithe Map & Approtionment? This should give you plenty of info regarding the farming in Sutton circa 1840.

Thanks for the suggestion Paul - no I haven't tried that. Do you know if this info is viewable online or N Yorks Archives or Keighley Library?

Not sure where it is held. N Yorks may have a microfilm copy but I have a feeling that the Wakefield archives hold the original. It doesn't show up on the A2A catalogue so I would suggest phoning Wakefield to check. If you end up going to the Wakefield office it might be worth looking at the enclosure records at the same time. The maps should shed light on extant farms at the time (1815-1824) and you will be able to pick out the ones that appeared post enclosure.

A copy of the Cowling tithe map and apportionments 1846 is held at N.Y.C.C. archives, but the original which is coloured is held at Wakefield archives, if you wish to even take a photograph of it there is a charge I think (quite a while since I contacted them). Luckily someone here made copies before they were all whisked away from us, the notes are v. interesting. Would advise everyone to take copies of as much as possible, and do still wonder why all our archives had to be taken so far away when they could have been held at Skipton if anywhere?

Keighley Library is very good, and staff are helpful - especially the old Keighley News copies on microfilm - v. time consuming. Craven Heralds at Skipton Library. If you look on Kly. Library site you can (or could) find a long list of all they hold there. Think you have to ring up about 24 hours in advance if you would like staff to get anything out of archives for when you go. You cannot take anything out of the building, but may use printer to copy if required. They are quite strict, but it is also comforting to know if you leave any archives there, they do look after them!

Hello Janet. If your search is for Hargreaves at Aden, you may have ancestors related to my late step mother Janet Hargreaves. Her father was Gilbert and her mother Milly. Gilbert was a butcher in Cross Hills, but the family lived at Aden. It's confusing because my own Hargreaves ancestors on my dads side are from Low Fold. My great Grandfather was Tempest Hargreaves who came to Sutton from Cowling Head in the early 1800's. Can I suggest Keighley and District Family History Society - their publications have lots of listings by surname, and there are place trade and profession details too. Membership gets free access to their collections at Keighley Local Studies library. There are trade books including the villages outside Keighley.
