pathway at kildwick
I wondered if anybody knows if its ok to cycle on the path that runs between the canal and the river at kildwick towards silsden and if the pathway actually runs right through to silsden? I've tried the canal path but its so badly rutted and I'm so out of practice that I keep nearly ending up in the water! Thanks! |

It's many years since I walked the path that you refer to - before they built the dual carriageway probably. The path runs through to Silsden, emerging onto the main Silsden - Steeton road at a stile close to the river, in the field used by the circus from time to time. However, a word of caution if you intend cycling, the path goes through a series of fields with gates or stiles separating them. Further, almost all that stretch of land is part of the Aire Valley Lake District and if it's not standing in water, I recall it being muddy in places for much of the year. Good for the leg muscles though! |

Thanks Howard, that's really good of you. I'll be brave and give it a go! If the canal path is anything to go by then I think you're right and it will be just too boggy but she who dares.....gets to silsden! :-) |

Not wishing to be a "party pooper", if you look at N Yorks rights of way mapping on-line, I think you'll find that the path to which you refer is just that, a footpath, and not a bridleway. There is, therefore strictly speaking, no right to cycle. |

I walked it today and although there is no sign saying you can't cycle, its clear that its not welcome as there are many styles along the route that are not even possible to carry your bike over, and to be honest I think that's fine. Farmers have a lot on with trying to do their thing and having to cope with ancient rights of way that traditionally have to cut through their land. It's a sad fact that not everybody bahaves well I'm afraid. On the plus side, we had a lovely morning walking on the river to silsden and then back along the canal to kildwick in the crisp wintry sunshine! |
