History of Greenroyd Mill
Might someone know the origin of the name of this mill? Is it a family or place name?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I was delighted to find this lovely site: it provides a lovely representation of Sutton-in-Craven, both "then" and now.

Hi Sue. The mill was founded by Peter Hartley - page 11 of "A Home Spun Yarn" by local historian Doris Riley, states:
"Peter founded Greenroyd as a worsted spinner 1830, it is believed to be the first in the district."
Peter Hartley died in 1831 and the mill was taken over by John Hartley (Peter's eldest son) in November 1831.
On the 1850 map of Sutton the mill is named "Old Mill"
So, Greenroyd doesn't appear to be the family name, but I'm not aware of any references to Greenroyd as a place name either.
