buckstones / new hall farm livery yard
I used to keep my pony there a few years ago... I looked this up on the net the other day and noticed it was sold. Does anybody know who bought it and whether or not it will still be a livery yard? |

Bridle Paths. Are they the paths that you could walk thru the country usually passing thru a farmyard? If so we used to walk from the farm just above the reservoir next to the higher entrance to the old hall and come out thru Malsies farm. There were many others which if you observed the correct protocol were available all over. |

I find this site very interesting as my ancestors came from Kildwick and are buried in the churchyard at St Andrews, Kildwick, parish church. They were John Stow and Ellen Emmott died 1841 and 1844 age 75 and 76 respectively. They lived at the aforementioned New Hall Farm and their son Stephen also farmed at New Hall and Malsis Hall. I occasionally have visited to put flowers on the grave. I had no idea that New hall farm still existed. Could anyone advise me where it is in relation to Kildwick village? I would also be interested i hearing from any Stows or Emmotts still living in the area. They had twelve children so surely someone still lives there.

Hi Denise, welcome to the site! The Buckstone Livery is on Buckstone Lane, high above Sutton. To get there from Kildwick, take the road to Cross Hills. In the centre of Cross Hills, after passing the Co-op, turn left at Thornton's butchers onto Holme Lane. This takes you into Sutton. Continue on Holme Lane past the park, the Black Bull and the Kings Arms. The road becomes High Street. Continue until you almost (but not quite) reach the Bay Horse. Turn right on West Lane and continue all the way up to the very top. You eventually reach a cross-roads. Continue straight across and you are on Buckstone Lane. I'm not sure where the New Hall Farm connection is, as old maps don't show this, only Higher Buckstone and Lower Buckstone. There was a New Hall Farm in Cowling, which I believe is now residential properties.

The Stow family lived and farmed at New Hall, near Malsis. Technically it is probably in Sutton but if you drive through Glusburn towards Colne, carry on past the Dog & Gun and it is the first farm on the right just before you reach Cowling. Paul is right-it has been converted into a multi propert development. |

I found this interesting, as I'm descended from John Stow and Ellen Emmott as well. The family was also connected with Cragside, which I think was usually recorded as Cowling, but there were family members scattered all over the two villages, as well as numerous other Emmotts that I/we haven't managed to link to.
Unfortunately, from a family history point of view, Ellen Emmott's parents don't seem to be among them, or if they are, they kept very quiet about it and I have yet to discover who they were. Maybe someone out there knows otherwise? |

We now live at New Hall Farm (between Malsis/ Cowling) - as I understand it, the New Hall Farm (now Buckstones) and this farm were once all part of the same farm, linked by fields and lanes etc - they're not too far apart as the crow flies.
Interesting to hear about people that used to live here!
Someone also told me that the house here is haunted - we haven't seen any ghosts, but I'm curious to find out more if anyone can help! |
