Sutton Mill Girls Hostel pictures.
Is there any way that we could open the file to allow us to see them. Unfortunately I am unable to do so. Reference is made in the comments to several of the ladies that I knew when working at Hartleys for a short while in th early 50's. Just wondered if they are as I remember or ismy memory playing tricks. |

Hi Alan - something seems to have gone adrift at Kevin's album site. The photos were appearing but I've just checked after seeing your post and the photos aren't there. Hopefully Kevin will check into it and normal service will be resumed. Paul |

The problem appears to be with BT who are hosting the album. Kevin has very kindly transferred the pictures to Photobox, and I've altered the link on the gallery page. Please note that to see the comments for each picture you need to select the 'Slideshow' option on the Photobox album page. The slideshow is a nice feature, you can set it going then sit back and relax as it cycles through the pictures. Paul |

Paul Thanks to you for arranging the transfer. Thanks to kevin for the photos. Mary Morgan was one of the girls that I remember from Hartleys. I was a young and innocent lad in those days and rather wary of the "Mill girls". Wilf Mount used to keep an eye on me but now and then I had to venture into their world. Mary always was on hand to ensure that I made it back out of the door safely. I don't know whether I should thank her or not. Is she still about and did she stay in the village. She used to attend the dances at the St. Thomas' Hall and taught me several old tyme dances. Once again you have stirred memories, thanks both. |

Alan - mum tells me that she last bumped into Mary Morgan 7 or 8 years ago. She had a farm just down the road towards Cullingworth from the Flappit crossroads. At the time mum seems to remember that Mary told her that one of the other hostel girls pictured, Sylvia Bagshore, was running the pub at Flappit. I've got mum on the case seeing if she can find any more photos from hostel girls she is still in contact with so watch this space & see if we can stir anything else up! |

Kevin, Thanks for the info. Mary was one of the few Hostel girls that I had anything to do with. The majority were older than me. I left Sutton when I was eighteen and did not have much opportunity to get to know them. Mary was a friend of a friend and as such maybe, took me under her wing. I could not resist asking when I saw her name mentioned. If you should speak to her, please give her my regards and wish her well. |

Alan - when I was last up in Sutton about a month ago I took some photos of the state of development at Hartley's Mill which you might be interested in. I should point out that a night on the ale the prevous evening and a greasy fingerprint on the lens from a hastily guzzley bacon sandwich meant that they didn't come out quite as well as I had hoped! The first shots were taken throught the railings looking over the dam site where they are building some houses, then some from down the lane towards the school & then along the main road fnishing up with some shots of and from the park. Kevin has added another batch of photos to his Sutton Mill Hostel album, listed in the gallery, bringing the total up to 37. Kevin's mum tracked them down, they were provided by Sheila Ready. Paul |
