GLUSBURN AND CROSS HILLS AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR
I would appreciate any information about Glusburn and Cross Hills men and women who served in the armed forces during the Second World War

David, If you can tell me what this information is to be used for I could provide some detail on my late father. Please email me on mike.towers46@talktalk.net

Having researched all our Cowling WW1 and 2 men over a long period of time, last year I made updated lists to hang in our 5 public buildings. Cowling still has 3 memorials, but a few have been destroyed. Wonder if Cross Hills/Glusburn had plaques in Ebeneezer, St. John's, cricket pavilion, tennis pavilion, work places etc. As you are no doubt already aware - a complicated subject for various reasons. There should be information in the local newspapers microfiche for the war years, and someone might have kept local news scrapbooks. Another source was the graveyard memorial inscriptions lists. I've never actually come across a full list of our Cowling men who enlisted, but there should be somewhere (Halifax?records)
Rolls of honour giving names of "their own men" who enlisted were sometimes in chapels, places of work etc. Any clues I tried to check with local people, and then finally with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site.
If I remember correct, the navy did not commemorate any person who died after the war period, even if the death was caused by it.

Wondered if anyone knows if there were rolls of honour in Hayfields Mills, Glusburn Institute or the Baptist Chapel pls. One of our Cowling men was Seaman Gilbert Hilton Gibb age 20 of Ickornshaw, Cowling, accidentally drowned on 5th May 1946 in Rio Harbour, Brazil, whilst serving in the Merchant Navy. Mr. Gibb formerly worked for Messrs. J. C. Horsfall and Sons, Hayfield Mills, Glusburn. (Information taken from the Keighley News.)
LOST AT SEA - NO RECORDS. Thanks.
