Local History, Heritage and points of interest
Since I arrived here in Sutton I have learned of some realy interesting local points of interest including the clough, Lunds Tower, the Pinnacle and I believe there is even some kind of witches circle area too? I would love to know more about the history and also to learn what other points of interest exist ? say in a five mile radius? What is South Craven proud of? what heritage is there that is worth mentioning and remembering or even recommending for a visit? |

If you are interested in Cowling -just up the road, pls. take a look on our Cowlingwebsite- a wonderful source of information and interest run by Mark and Kathryn -with hundreds of old photos, and our history and information section, also we have the www.Moon-rakers site (Cowling History). If you can get hold of "Cowling a Moorland Parish" published 1980 this is packed with Cowling history, and there are various books on Sutton and surrounding area, besides your own super web site! As a lifelong resident, I would say Cowling is proud that Philip Snowden Chllr. Exchequer was born at no. 54 Middleton, also proud of our Cowling Pinnacle (salt pot, or Wainman's Monument)-ha-ha which is actually in Sutton! Proud of our surrounding countryside, moors, free shooting rights for residents, our good little school, and our very rich history. However, there are still lots of improvements which could be made? |

Basil, Try looking at the books written by Doris Riley. She is the Sutton historian. The village has a great deal of history and much to be proud of. Happy Hunting. |
