Charlie Throup, Henry Throup (father) and Elizabeth Maud Throup (nee Ryecroft)
Hello, I'm not sure the purpose of your forum is for this - if it isn't - I apologise.
I am at the very start of researching my family. My grandfather born in Feb 1912 at 12 High Street Sutton, was called Charlie Throup. His father was Henry Throup (an Overlooker of Worsted Weaving). His mother was Elizabeth Maud Throup.
I know my grandfather had brothers called Joe (born 1918 - never married), Fred (who married Wynn) , and a sister called Jenny who died in November 1989.
My grandfather married Georgina Mary Grantham from Bentley in Doncaster, who may been a weaver in a mill at Sutton. During the second World War, Charlie my grandfather was a Military policeman, my grandmother Mary lived at 1 Well Street for part of the war, which I think no longer exists. My uncle Charles Throup was born in 1942 and my Mother Pamela Throup was born in 1946, both I believe to have been born in Sutton.
If any of this rings a bell, or if you may have known any of my relatives, I would be very grateful if you could reply. Many thanks.

re the Throups. A Chris Throup responded to Julie Baxter (nee Mcvay) on the forum on 1/5/06.Possibly he may be of help though he is now in Oz,web master may have his contact e mail and possibly willing to forward on to him your request for information about the Throups |

Does anyone know where the best place to access employee records from the mills in Sutton?
I think my grandmother, Georgina Mary Grantham was a dyer at one of the mills, she may also have been living in the womens hostel before she married my grandfather.
Leaving a relatively comfortable life at home to live in a hostel and train in a new job seems a strange thing to do - does anyone have any general information on the life in the hostel. Was it a good job to be in? Was it a better life for many? I am intrigued by the social history. I'm really hoping someone in Sutton has researched the mills and their history.

Hi Mandy,
I have a copy of a quite well researched Throup family tree but unfortunately a lot of it isn't complete after early 1900's. It goes back to William and Mary (of Silsden Moor) (married 1729).
The nearest match I can see is a Charles (my grandfather John's brother) but born in June 1899.
Do you have any other family names or residences? |

Check out my entry on the Forum relating to Thomas Edward Bell. I posted the text of a newspaper article about the wartime experiences of two Sutton men who were serving in the Royal Navy, Tom Bell and a Mr Hardacre. You'll see mention of a Fred Throup from Sutton who was a survivor from the aircraft carrier 'Eagle' sunk in the Mediterranean. It would seem that this might be your grandfathers brother? |
