School Project about Bairstow's Mill, 1964
With thanks to Robin Longbottom for providing the scans and notes.
Below are three photos from a school project that I did, back in 1964, about Bairstow's Mill. I was taken on a full
tour of the mill and collected samples of the various processes along the way. The samples are shown in the photos. The processes along
route are briefly explained and may remind some of the older residents in the village of the departments that they worked in and give younger
ones an impression of a now lost industry in the village. My aunt Greta Norton worked in the twisting department and was extremely pleased
to see me being shown around, my aunt Lizzie and my grandmother had also once worked in the twisting section.
Also included are photos taken from the 1938 Centenary booklet showing the huge mill complex and some of the processes. Combing Spinning Weaving |
