Photos from the collection of Tom Bell
Denis Pickles sent scans of the following photographs from Tom Bell's collection,
together with the accompanying notes:
Tom Bell is the grandson of a William Bell who was for many years the village Bobby. His uncle was John Stanley Bell,
who used to teach at Sutton Council School and who became the youngest mayor of Keighley. The Bell family, a big one,
played an important role in village life and will be remembered by most of the older village inhabitants.
Photos of Mr and Mrs William Bell taken at the Baptist Chapel on the occasion of their Golden Wedding Anniversary.
All their sons and daughters and grandchildren were present.
Group photo including teachers. Another picture from the 'Bell' Gallery, I find it very interesting.
Looking at it more closely, as well as John Stanley Bell and his dad, William Bell, I recognise two more familiar faces -
those of my old school friend Peter Barsby and a near neighbour from Bent Lane, Sidney Laycock.
What could this group represent? Perhaps the Parish Council or more likely, something in connection with the Council School.
Governors and Head Teachers perhaps? What was the occasion and where was the photograph taken?
High Street. This must have been taken before 1900. It features four notable Sutton
landmarks - The Black Bull, The Kings Arms, the old Manor House and the residence later to be occupied by
the famous Carey Overend!
