'New Smithy' at Low Fold

With thanks to Robin Longbottom

Below is a photo of the 'New Smithy' at Low Fold, which has now been demolished to make way for new housing. The smithy was built about 1905 when John Willie Hartley rebuilt Low Fold Farm. It used to be said in the village that the old smithy was in such a bad state of repair that Wilson Davy, the blacksmith, nearly froze to death in it one night, prompting John Willie to build a new one for him. Wills Davy made the gates for Sutton Hall, which are now at the entrance to Cliffe Castle in Showfield.
