May Festival, Sutton Park, 12th May 1934 With thanks to John Laycock.
"Below is a photo of the May Festival which was celebrated in the park on the first Saturday in May.
This was instigated by the Parish Council and a maypole was erected in the park which many people will remember still being there until the 1960s.
However after three consecutive wet years the festival was abandoned for several years only to be revived in 1927.
The photo can be dated to 12th May 1934 (perhaps the first Saturday was wet again) when Miss Betty Walworth was crowned May Queen." |
